Yvonne, Marketing Director at Le Grandeur Hotel Palm Resort in Senai invited me to have dinner at The Grill at Cocomo.

The Grill at Cocomo is located at the ground level between the reception and the pool at Le Grandeur Hotel Palm Resort.

(We earlier had lunch at the resort's Xin Shan Long 新山龙 fusion Japanese-Chinese restaurant.)

Initially, I wasn't introduced to Chef Ravi because he was already in the thick of action in the open kitchen when we arrived. Yvonne just allowed me to roam free for photo taking. The fire and vibrations from the open kitchen caught my eye. Chef Ravi had a kind of magnetic presence, authority and flow as he went about commanding the kitchen. It was a pleasure to watch the man in action.

Later, we sat down with Chef Ravi and found out that he had over 20 years' experience in several hotels including JB's Holiday Inn (today's Mutiara Hotel). Passionate and high energy, the cheerful Ravi is still experimenting and trying new ways of cooking in his quest for perfection.

As a food blogger, I enjoyed the privilege of photographing our dinner being prepared :P

This sizzling steak was making me drool.

Back at our table, the simple garlic toast was perfect in getting our stomach juices flowing.

Australia chilled rib-eye RM88.00+ (200 grams)

I asked for my steak to be done medium rare. Made from a thick slab of Australian chilled rib-eye, it was tender and savoury with beefy juices.

Braised lamb shank RM68.00+

Braised lamb shank - one of my favourite dishes. Fall-apart tender and savoury with a slight hint of that lamb gaminess that make mutton lovers swoon.

Grilled chicken breast RM58.00+

Yvonne let me try a piece of her order of grilled chicken breast. It was tender, slightly moist and the caramelised sauce gave the skinless white meat a mild savoury flavour.

Grilled salmon steak RM78.00+

The thick slab of orangey hued char grilled salmon steak. The caramelised sauce on the surface mellowed the distinctive salmon flavour. As the slab was nicely grilled, the inside was still moist.

The main courses come with complimentary salad buffet.

To end off, we had cake and ice cream desserts.

1. LEGOLAND MALAYSIA

2. KOTA ISKANDAR, JOHOR

Kota Iskandar, Johor State Administrative Centre was opened in April 2009 and is now one of the must see places in Johor. Inspired by Moorish-Andalusian and Johor Malay designs and motifs, Kota Iskandar is Malaysia's first Experiential Parliament where visitors through our guided tours will be allowed the chance to enter Johor's beautiful state parliament hall and immersed in Johor's rich culture and history while understanding the symbolisms and abstract interpretations in true style and splendour of Kota Iskandar- Johor's Living Legacy.

3. ROYAL ABU BAKAR MUSEUM

This architectural wonder was completed in 1866. It was commissioned by the late Sultan Abu Bakar and is also known as the Grand Palace (Istana Besar Johor).

Following a Renaissance style, the building was constructed by local artisans under the supervision of an European architect. The original furniture of the palace was made in England and ordered by the late Sultan Abu Bakar in 1866.

The palace was renovated to become a museum in 1982 and was officially opened in 1990.

Catch a glimpse of the grand lifestyle of the royal family through the silverware, ornaments as well as souvenirs by dignitaries that are on display at the museum. There are also pictures of the royal family from the reign of Sultan Abu Bakar.

Visit the museum today for an interesting historical journey of Johor's famous royal family. Opening hours are Saturday through Thurday, 9am– 5pm.

4. SULTAN ABU BAKAR MOSQUE

On top of a hill in downtown Johor Bahru, overlooking the Straits of Johor and neighbouring Singapore, stands the magnificent Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, one of the most beautiful old mosques in Malaysia.

The construction of the mosque marked the start of Johor's modernisation process in 1892, which was commissioned by the "Father of Modern Johor", the late Sultan Abu Bakar. It took eight years to build and was completed in 1900. The mosque can accommodate 2,000 worshippers at any one time.

The mosque is a mix of architectural styles, but principally Victorian. It is said that the minarets look like British watch towers.

Today, the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque is listed as a protected heritage monument by the Department of Museums and Antiquities.

We took the opportunity of the long weekend to be away, it was initally a trip to the Hong Kong Disneyland but Daddy wasn't keen to bring BB K to HK. Then we sort of decided to Gold Coast but made a decision to postponed it till later. Eventually, V got slighty irritated with our constant change of plans *opps and we relented to going to Legoland. I have read rave reviews of it but there was a "hoax" of kidnappers that sort of steered us away actually but of course eventually made that decision to go- Just because it was just a stone's throw away!

I did a little reseacrch and decided on the Traders since we were to be there for 5 days. We needed some where price friendly (I am comparing with Legoland Hotel during CNY), and no fuss when it comes to food. I settled on Traders Club Floor coz we decided on NOT going anywhere but just rot in the hotel. For Club lounge caters breakfast and snacks during Happy Hour... okie you got me there, it was the HH that I was interested. I mean Free flow of alcohol while the children are occupied. The formula is quite right, right?

We spent our mornings and evening here with the exception of our day to LegoLand. The service was exemplary which was worth that extra price. Here are the spread they offer ...

Attached on the roof top is the hotel swimming pool, it an infinity pool overlooks the Marina (nothing much seriously) But I must add that the waters are COLD! Omg, we tried going there in the morning and once in the evening.. it was Burr cold. The children didn't do very well inside especially the baby.

Here is a view of our Club Floor room, seriously don't think there is much of a difference though Mr Bellboy told us that Club Floor rooms are bigger. Room is comfy as you can see in the photo and the children had a day bed to play around in. The King sized bed is slighly on the high side for the baby and so its better to create a play area around the day bed. There are cartoons for the children and Channel News Asia/HBO for the adults.

The room set up

There isn't a bath tub so bring your blow up ones if baby are younger in age. The girls totally enjoyed the "Rain Shower", it became their highlight of the trip since the pool was too cold. I must add that the bathroom floor is on the slippery side so better be in the bathroom with them when they are having their rain shower water play.

Traders offer a free shuttle to Legoland but you will have to book your seat with front desk. We didn't use the shuttle mainly coz it was full! But we did ask the staff at the Club Lounge who recommended us to drive and park at Legoland for 7 Ringgit. I would recco to drive/park since you won't want to miss the highlight of the fireworks which are later in the night and the last shuttle I was told leave at 7pm.

We enjoyed the stay alot and will use them again for a staycation for their location, security and booze/food. We had a hiccup and my green chilli didn't come with my horfun despite calling 3 times. But it was CNY and we understand they were running on a full load. Room service food was a bit blah but I will reccomend a cafe by the Marina that serves yummy local food if you don't mind walking a little. Don't bother eating at that Lat's place, save your calories for other restaurants.

Since the opening of Legoland Malaysia, I have yet the chance to check out the new theme park in Johor Bahru. Bok had some complimentary entrance tickets to the theme park and we planned a weekend getaway with Caroline and Eric. The four of us carpool down to Johor Bahru and it was approximately 3 hours drive. We managed to fill up our tummy with some Sarawak food on our way to Legoland in JB. We spent the entire noon in Legoland before checking in to our stay at Amansari Residence Resort.

Amansari Residence Resort is situated and surrounded by middle and high-end residential housing within the Eastern Gate Development Zone of Iskandar Development Region known as one of the premium hotels in Johor Bahru. The resort is nearby to the Regency Specialist Medical Centre, International Japanese School, Ocville Golf Club and Ponderosa Golf Club.The entire resort comprises both hotel rooms and apartment types of accommodation to cater different types of travelers. It is within easy access to Johor Bahru city center when using new highway.

We were welcomed with a huge and spacious lobby. There's welcome drinks by the side of the lobby counter for thirsty travelers. Check-in was smoothly done and we got our keys to our respective rooms.

We stayed in Amansari Deluxe Room which is close to RM200 after tax and inclusive of breakfast. The room comes with a queen-sized bed, air-conditioning, 32″ LCD TV with satellite and cable channels, telephone with IDD, in-room Electronic Safe Box, mini bar fridge, iron and ironing board, digital weighing scale, hair dryer and laundry basket. There's free WiFi in each room too.

Clean bathroom that comes with lotus shower head and basic toilet amenities (toothbrush, soap, foam bath, shampoo, body lotion, cotton buds, shower cap and sanitary bag).

There are a pair of comfy and relaxing chairs and table at the balcony overlooking the golf course.

Looking down from our balcony is the view of the resort's man-made pond.

We did a quick tour around the resort to check out their facilities: Courtyard Cafe, GoZen Japanese Restaurant, Gym, Library, Ping Pong Table, Squash Court and Tennis Court.

The resort has 3 swimming pools: Jacuzzi pool, kid's swimming pool and 1.4m deep pool for adults. The next morning, I went to have a swim after breakfast. The kid's pool looks fun because there's a slide but the depth of the pool is less than a feet. So, landing was not pleasant. It was a quick swim before we went back to our room as it is very cold and chilly. The resort is very windy and I have very thin skin with lousy fats

There are a few function halls ranging from small to huge ones which could accommodate up to 1,000 persons! Various functions were held in various halls and most popular one is Wedding banquet. I also heard that the resort also host Garden Weddings.

Buffet breakfast (if included with room) is available at the Courtyard cafe. Facing the golf course, it was a windy meal and at one point, I was shivering at the morning breeze.

They have quite a spread for breakfast consisting both Western and local delicacies. Plenty of hot coffee, tea and fruit juices as well. There's cereals too.

The Courtyard Cafe is open for lunch as well. We had our lunch here before heading back to KL.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay and it is suitable for travelers with kids, especially if you're planning for Legoland Malaysia. It is quite a drive from the theme park, but it's worth the stay as along the way, there are plenty of seafood restaurants and eateries (we even hunt for koay teow kia which not very far). Or if you're looking for a place to stay for a short term rental, the resort do provide short term stay on monthly basis at reasonable rates.
