Ally's In Wonderland: Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru Posted: 22 Jun 2014 08:40 PM PDT Last weekend, we had an awesome staycation at the new Doubletree by Hilton Hotel at Jalan Ngee Heng, Johor Bahru. The hotel building was previously Landmark if you are familiar. We were one of the folks who were invited to stay there for 2 nights, for their 'test run'. Could this be the best hotel in Johor Bahru? YES! The Service: The Reception. I love the flock of birds wall art. The Design: Oh where do I even start!! I LOVE EVERYTHING IN THAT HOTEL! It's modern yet organic. I would love to meet the designer and the one who sourced for the cool awesome stuff in it, seriously. To give you a bit of the style, if you love MUJI, you'll love staying here. And I noticed the unique lamps and light fixtures. Wooden block chandelier... ...above this dining table at Makan Kitchen. The Lobby: Love this long big table. Other hotels may not have the luxury of space for this but they don't know how useful it is! And for me, I am so tempted to cut fabric on it! The Room: The corridor leading to our room. Bathrobes and extra pillow. What I love about this door is that the bottom is lined with squeegee, so it sweeps away any excess water on the floor outside the shower cubicle. Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries. Enlarge mirror. And see that 'up down' switches? They are for opening and closing this shade. Some people just want to watch TV when they shower huh...tsk tsk tsk. The phone. The other stuff worth mentioning is that all the switches are labelled so you don't have a hard time finding which switches are for which lights. This is one of the little things that make a hotel room rock. The Makan Kitchen: Keropok station My favourite station. Ulam, cucumber, local salad, and the belacan dips! Indian Cuisine. Rojak. Satay. The noodle station. There are local kuehs too on the other side. LOVE the chairs. The jacuzzi and steam room: The ladies changing room. The jacuzzi, overlooking JB townscape. Steam room. And *DRUMROLL*... THE POOL! I'm not boasting or anything (OH YES I AM!) but I think it is the most awesome pool I have seen and swam in. Because it is built by the husband! I have to tell you though, this area is very breezy, and is shaded from 3 pm onwards, so the water is quite cold! If you want the sun, go before 3pm. Panoramic view. Shower area. Kids just love to walk along this shallow path. Poolside chillax area. This place comes alive at night! It is a very cool place to hang out for drinks after dinner. The gym: You get the perfect poolview when you're running on the treadmill. The signature cookie: How cute is that a hotel has a signature cookie. It is not too sweet, has lots of chocolate chips and nuts in it. Just awesome. It was such an honour to be one of the very first guest to experience Doubletree's immaculate standard. |
Ramadan Buffet, The Grand GEM Restaurant @ The Grand Blue ... Posted: 24 Jun 2014 12:00 AM PDT 24 June 2014 Thank you to the extended invitation of Tony, Johor Kaki and Peggy Loh, My Johor Story, MaCherie Johor Bloggers and I got the chance to try out Grand GEM restaurant's Ramadan Buffet. The Grand GEM restaurant is serving authentic Indian cuisine for the past 17 years. In conjunction with Ramadan month, buffet dinner will be prepared by chefs from different part of India. Their main courses are prepared by 3 of their resident Muslim Chefs (Chef Jakir Hosen, Chef Reyaz and Chef Jainul). Onion Pakoda as starter
Another great starter The refreshing salsa sauce on top of crispy capati
Mint Sauce or Pudina Sauce A very refreshing mint smell. I like to eat it with Roti Romali. Mixed Grill Platter Red -> Chicken Tandoori. The chef tried new method to cook it. Thus the chicken meat is very tenderWhite -> Chicken meat marinated with cashew nut paste. It have nutty taste Green -> Pudina Chicken White stick -> Chicken meat mince marinated with yogurt and herbs. It was BBQ over the fire. This the over later is a bit hard texture. Garlic Naan with three types of graves. Chicken Curry Gravy to go with naan Mutton Curry Gravy to go with naan. Bhuna Gosh (Mutton) This is my favorite mutton paste to go with naan. The mutton is full with herb. Most importantly, it is very tender and soft. I think elder people can just eat it without much difficulty.Brocolli with Mushroom My first time to see boiled vegetables served with thin sliced cheese. Nasi Goreng Kampung Don't worry. This Nasi Goreng Kampung is not spicy at all. Moreover, it have lots of fried ikan bilis in it. Roti Romali The flat dough is baked on top of wok. As you can see from the image above, The wok is placed up side down on the fire stove. Why is the wok white in colour? THe chef explained that it is due to salt water. Before the chef the bread, some salt water is sprinkle on the hot wok, No oil was involved in baking this Roti Romali. It is very healthy. How is the taste? it is very chewy. I am having great fun to tear the bread into bits. Vegetarian Burgers I prefer the potato paste. It is very smooth. The restaurant do serve several vegetarian dishes too. Gulab Jamun A fired milky ball in syrup. Kesari I prefer this dessert. According to vegRecipeIndia website, kesari is a popular south Indian sweet made from semolina during festive season. This dessert is vegetarian dessert too. Masala Tea A nice and hot herb tea to end the meal. Thanks to Ms. Peggy Loh sharing some great old Johor's stories with us. She is not a writer. She is a story teller. Johor Bahru, 2013 | Vondelicious! Posted: 03 Jul 2014 06:31 AM PDT Minature Lego KLIA It's been a while since my last holiday post, because searching through the hundreds of holiday photos to find the food ones is just too much work that I just about give up everytime. But the fact that holiday posts are the most fun to reread again makes the time and effort worthwhile :)When we visited Singapore at the end of last year, we only stayed for a day, because we had planned to head over to Malaysia for a couple of days afterwards. With Johor Bahru being just over the border, we stopped there first to checkout Legoland where much fun was to be had. Unfortunately, getting there was not as easy as we'd anticipated on a Friday evening, with literally hours of waiting for the public buses, extremely heavy traffic, huge crowds at immigration, taxi drivers which swarmed us despite the presence of a system for allocating taxis to passengers and taxis which took us through long dark unlit roads which seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. By the time we reached our hotel some 4 hours after we had planned, we were exhausted and pretty scarred by the experience. Lesson learnt: never travel between Singapore and JB on a Friday night!! Egg Roti Luckily that was the only bad experience we had of Johor Bahru, and after a good night's rest, we were ready to continue with our trip. We'd purchased tickets for a shuttle from our hotel to Legoland, but it was only upon collection of our tickets that we realised the so called 'shuttle' was actually a Honda Odyssey, seating 7 passengers, so we missed out on securing seats for the earliest shuttle. With more than an hour to spare, we had a nice chat to the owner of Saffron Cuisine, who suggested we have breakfast at his restaurant whilst we wait.Nasi Lemak We weren't too hungry, so we didn't order much, but the menu was quite extensive with plenty of interesting Indian options. We went for their breakfast special, of Nasi Lemak, watermelon, orange juice and coffee (there was also a less exciting Western breakfast on offer too, if my memory serves me right!).Dosa The waitress also suggested we try the dosa, and since we couldn't choose which one to order, we went with the plainest one. We'd only ever had dosa once in Sydney, but this version was quite different as this one was soft, whereas the one we'd had before was crispier- I quite enjoyed this one, especially dipped in the accompanying sauces, although I my parents preferred the roti we ordered, as they weren't too fond of the slight tang of the dosa. We reach Legoland shortly after- I was never much of a Lego fan, but the sight of the brightly coloured Lego blocks was quite exciting! They even have a Legoland hotel right next to the theme park, with Lego themed rooms which we would have loved to stay at if only they had rooms for 4 people! I loved the miniland the best, with various minature cities built out of lego. The amount of detail was amazing, though it's hard to really admire everything when all you really want to do is get out of the scorching sun! Having only just come from Singapore, I really liked the Singapore one- the attractions were so similar to the real thing! They even had interactive ones, with dancing figures and spraying water with the touch of a button :) The themepark is actually quite small- we easily visited every ride and attraction within 2 hours. The lack of shelter and the scorching heat also meant that it was difficult to stay there for too long! Located adjacent to the theme park is the Mall of Medini, where there is an abundance of dining options. For lunch, we chose the first restaurant which seemed to have good air conditioning and an interesting menu, which ended up being Manhattan Fish Market. Scallop Americana It's a nice restaurant, with comfy seating, aircon levels just enough to cool us down, and an extensive seafood menu with prices around the same as you'd expect in Australia......but in Ringgits (: We love how cheap everything is in Malaysia! The Scallop Americana didn't come with as many scallops as the picture made us believe (they are there, you just can't see them in the picture!), and wasn't too exciting, but the pasta was cooked well.Seafood Chowder Service was pretty slow, and they forgot our seafood chowders until we asked for them at the end. It was nice and creamy, though surprisingly light for a chowder. Manhattan Star Platter The Manhattan Star Platter arrived with quite a show, with the 'Manhattan Flaming Prawns' being flamed right in front of us. It's perfect for sharing, with grilled calamari, fried oysters, poached garlic herb mussels, mediterranean baked fish on a bed of fried rice. And after a satisfying meal, we head off to catch a bus to KL!
