Awesome Birthday Stay and Legoland Package at Renaissance ...

What a wonderful day we had last week. It was Jolie's birthday, so we brought Nadine and her to Legoland. We chose to stay not at the Legoland Hotel, but at the five-star Renaissance Johor Bahru (part of the Marriott group). Once you read through, you'll know why. We all loved this new hotel when we first stayed there last year. It's beautiful, elegant, clean and food is great there!

Regular room rates run from RM308 (a mere S$118). There are several good deals on the website - we liked the Discovery Legoland Adventure Package (RM668 -1170, which is about S$256-450):
• Daily buffet breakfast for two adults and two children
• One combo day pass for two adults and one child to Legoland (additional tickets RM175 per adult; RM140 per child)
• Club Lounge Access for Junior Suite room bookings

The hotel was very kind to arrange for us a Junior Suite and adjoining twin room. These are perfect for families.

They also helped us arrange for transport from Marriott Singapore into Johor Bahru. But for families that drive, it's less than 45 minutes from Singapore to the hotel.

We spent the day at Legoland. Have you seen the Star Wars Miniland yet? I have a post on all the seven epic scenes they built from each of the movies in the franchise, plus the animated series. Naboo, Kashyyyk, Hoth, Endor, Tatooine...it's all there!

They planned a surprise for us
Back at the hotel, they planned a surprise for Jolie in her room. Balloons, all pearly pink and white, plus rose petals spelling "Happy Birthday!" What a nice touch. The shrieks of happiness rivalled that of the ones we got inside Legoland.

Birthday sweets and a sweet note
A sweet handwritten note with candy awaited Jolie too. And lollipops - the surefire way to kids' hearts.

The Junior Suite living room
The Junior Suite is extremely spacious - 69sqm/742sqft to 81sqm/872sqft! The living/sitting area is tastefully done. It has a separate toilet and wash basin is outside the bedroom too.

The Junior Suite bedroom
The bedroom follows the same contemporary decor. I really like the rooms. The space is peaceful and soothing.

Relaxing reading corner in the Junior Suite
An easy chair in the corner for reading or relaxing.

The bathroom area is like one big extra suite you can run through. The bathtub (with huge windows) is further down with separate shower and toilet stalls. All very roomy.

Junior Suite bathroom
The bath entrance is flanked by his and her washbasins on one side, closet on the other.

Tokyo Milk toiletries
Tokyo Milk toiletries - some of the more wonderful and whimsical selections I've seen in hotels. Good stuff!

Bath time!
We made good use of the rose petals. A nice soak spells pure joy.

The Renaissance Johor Bahru viewed on 6th floor
The hotel has pools, sauna and gym on the sixth floor.

There's two pools - lap pool and shallow round pool
The view of the pools from above. One small round kiddy pool, and a lap pool 1.4m in depth.
It was SO HARD to get the kids out of the pool once they went in...

Pool cabana
Nice elegant cabanas by the pool. They also have pool terrace rooms that open out straight to the pool area. I will show you that in a separate post, along with the other room types they have.

Cafe BLD serves breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets at the Renaissance
And what holiday would it be without good food? Cafe BLD at the Renaissance serves breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, as its name suggests. The selection is quite impressive and the quality is very decent compared to other hotels I've tried in Malaysia.

Cold seafood - shrimp, mussels, scallops
Cold seafood on ice - such a must-have for many. Shrimp, mussels and scallops to go with various dips and sauces.

Real charcoal grill for satay!
And a real charcoal grill for satay? OK, how awesome is that?

The satay is to die for
And indeed the satay is superb! Juicy chunks of richly marinated lamb, chicken and beef grilled to aromatic perfection. I had to Instagram this immediately. No need to drive to Kajang for overhyped satay. Just pop over to JB. Man, I could come back just for this.

They also have a beautifully done Western grilled lamb and roast beef. There was a red snapper fillet dish that I liked too.

Sushi and maki section
The sushi, sashimi and maki selections along with Japanese pickles. Hmm, I need to make more takuan (daikon pickles) at home. So good with rice.

Antipasti section
The antipasti and breadsticks.

Who moved the cheese?
Cute way of displaying cheese...but looks like somebody moved the emmental!

Renaissance JB4
The hot mains in claypots are generally pretty good, but dishes may vary from day to day.

I love DIY gado-gado
Last year they had a DIY gado gado corner alongside the salads. I hope they bring this back!

One of several live stations at Cafe BLD
There are several live stations - teppanyaki, soup noodles, and satay. In the mornings, they make eggs any way you want, roti canai (prata) and thosai/dosai too.

Dim sum that is not bad for a hotel
The dim sum is not too bad for a hotel buffet.

Christmas and chocolate fountain goodies
Dessert takes up a separate corner altogether. For Christmas, they have the festive pieces of gingerbread houses and such. Too pretty to eat.

Make your own shaved ice dessert
Besides the cakes, tarts, pastries, jellies, puddings, ice cream, cookies, and fruits, you can also make your own shaved ice dessert.

The Renaissance has an inhouse showcase bakery
The Renaissance has its own inhouse bakery, which is itself a showcase. Lovely smells come from here.

Breakfast pastries - the kids only went for donuts!
Breakfast! Lots of selections. Pastries, cereals, the requisite ham, eggs, pancakes, beans, tomatoes, porridge, noodles, etc.

Nasi lemak so sedap
Nasi lemak - fluffy rice so lemak cooked in coconut cream! Comes with a great sambal sotong, condiments and cucur ikan (fish dough fritters).

Dosai on demand!
I was hoping for roti canai that morning, but they do rotate what's available. Well, dosai on demand ain't bad. And I love the way Malaysia does it - crispy!

The Executive Lounge on the 16th floor
If you have the Junior Suite, you could choose to have breakfast at the Executive Lounge on the 16th floor. It's quiet, cosy and definitely offers more privacy.

The Executive Lounge offers something all day, afternoon tea, evening hors d'oeuvres and light snacks. Enjoy their mini business centre facilities for up to two hours per day, and the complimentary wi-fi.

The best part is the view of the bay. Check out the balcony. This place is also stunningly beautiful at night with the lights.

Renaissance Hotel lobby

Service at the hotel has been marvellous too. The staff are polite, cheerful and easy-going. They look like they enjoy their work. We really enjoy our stay here each time, and will definitely be back. If you're looking at a short holiday nearby or staycation, this is a very good option.

I have more photos of the different rooms and the exquisite Wan Li Cantonese restaurant to show you - akan datang...upcoming post!

The Renaissance is a five-star brand, and there are only three such hotels in Malaysia. I am now tempted to visit the Kuala Lumpur and Kota Bahru ones!

Many thanks to Renaissance Johor Bahru for arranging the hotel stays!

Carinn; carerynn: Travel: [Hotel] Double Tree by Hilton, Johor Bahru

Posted: 22 Dec 2014 02:07 AM PST

Good Monday morning to you! Don't fret if you're having Monday blues because Christmas is coming! I'm here to cheer you up with some pretty photos, taken back when I visited Double Tree by Hilton in JB. The photos are so nice, it'd be a waste not to share them right? If you're planning on finding a place to chill and grab a bite, a place for staycation or a place to host functions, this hotel has it all. You might have caught a glimpse of the photos from my previous OOTD post here :p

The Lobby

The Food Place - a cafe and eatery for quick bites and a good place for business meetings.

Is it weird that I'm obsessed with that marble counter? *.*

What we ordered for tea that day, courtesy of Grace, the marketing manager of Double Tree JB :) Honestly, the food is quite reasonably priced and not to mention, yummy too! Do try the cheesecake and XL sized chocolate shake if you have the chance.

I was impressed by how spacious the dining area was. The concept is a fusion of Western & Eastern decor.

Love these flying birds ornaments in the ceiling!

D'gio Wedding has a section there if anyone's interested.

Outdoor Patio

There is also a rooftop area for hosting wedding, events or parties. All you need are some large umbrellas cos it's super hot lol.

Tosca Dining Place

Tosca is an in-house Italian dining restaurant. I love the interior and it is lovely, suitable for dinner parties or simply date night. There are 3 private rooms for private dining, and one of them has a clear panel for diners to observe the chef at work. Tosca also serves an array of cocktail and alcohol.

Poolside

My favourite place in the whole hotel! The pool isn't Olympic-sized but it's just as gorgeous! We basically spent the afternoon just lounging by the pool (too bad we didn't bring our swimsuits!) and sipped on strawberry daiquirie which BTW, is delicious! Must-try if you're ever there. Do note that while it's a great place to take photos, only guests are allowed in the pool.

With Aud, Eunice and Edlyn!

Ending the post with some wefies that we took there. It's a great place to take photos, honestly! Especially on a good day like this. So much love for these girls :)

If you're interested to find out more about the hotel and its rates or facilities, do check out the Double Tree by Hilton website and Facebook page. Psst.. All guests are treated to a complimentary Double Tree cookie which I heard tastes amazing! Lol. For more photos, you can check out my albums here and here :)

Double Tree, Double Delight at Hotel Hilton in Johor Bahru ...

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 04:33 AM PST

Our last and final destination was Johor Bahru, though I had been to Johor Bahru briefly in 2009, but I saw it in a completely new light with this Mega FAM trip organised by Malaysia Tourism. After paying tribute to shopper's Mecca – Johor Premium Outlets located on the outskirts of Johor, we reached Hotel Double Tree Hilton. Somehow I got the feelers that this hotel and our stay would be unique here. How true my senses turned out to be! A very warm welcome awaited us and a complimentary Cookie Card was given to us on arrival. A cookie lover, that I am, I wasted no time in getting my cookie. The cookie is given to every guest who checks in the hotel. I was curious to know about this and I was told that hotel gives out approximately 77,000 chocolate chip cookies each day adding up to more than 28 million cookies annually. Since 1995, Christie Cookie Company has been the keeper of their secret cookie recipe. That's why they taste so good!

Double tree
Ideally located in the Central Business District, within walking distance of the Persada Convention Center, the contemporary DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru overlooks the surrounding city and the Straits of Johor. Here you can enjoy easy access to City Square shopping and attractions including Johor Zoo and the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque. Changi International Airport and Senai International Airport are easily reached from the hotel.

Mr Amarinder Sadana, Director, Business Development accompanied by Hadi Abdullah, Sales Manager took us around the hotel where many more surprises unfolded. More on that later. A very hospitable staff took us to our rooms which were very spacious, well-lit, well-equipped and could see swimming pool located on the 13th floor. It was heavenly experience to sit on the window and watch Johor's skyline from hotel's window early morning.

Next morning our day began with breakfast at Makan a multi-cuisine restaurant manned by expert chefs and other staff. Food was just awesome like Pancakes, Omelettes, Stews, Sausages, Croissants, fresh salad bowls, juices, breads, idli's what not. That was best part of the day. I looked forward to that every day. Indeed Makan Kitchen is an eclectic mix of famous cuisine prepared in live, interactive kitchen showcasing diversity of many native favourites from different states of the country.

Mr Sadana and Mr Abdullah took us round the hotel and we were witness to some really luxurious suits which are best suited for royalty where one could unwind in a spacious guest room, offering city or Straits water views, a large desk, 40″ LED TV and WiFi. Not only had this it had facilities for a kitchenette, laundry facilities and Executive Lounge access.

Mr Sadana said, "You can hold a business or social function at our hotel with 13,993 sq.ft. of event space, including two magnificent divisible ballrooms, five meeting rooms and an outdoor terrace. Whether you have a corporate business meeting or your dream wedding, we will do it with élan." He added, "We have 335 well – appointed guest rooms and suits including 22 apartment style suites."
During the tour, Mr Sadana took us to 13th floor where swimming pool was located. This was the outdoor pool with separate pool for children.

After this he took us to Tosca – Fine Dining Italian Restaurant and believe me I had never seen such wonderful restaurant in any of my international sojourns. Tosca is located poolside of 13th floor. Mr Sadana added, "Our Italian Trattoria and bar offer rustic Italian food prepared with contemporary flair for lunch and dinner, along with stunning views over the Straits of Johor. Not only this it also offers dining options ranging from indoor, private family dining room with transparent kitchen, poolside and private rooms." Wining & Dining would certainly be a treat here with friends, family and business associates.

Their friendly and attentive staff provided personalized service throughout our stay. No wonder they call it CARE (Create A Rewarding Experience). "From your arrival to your departure — and everything in between — we'll go above and beyond to make you feel cared for," quipped Abdullah.

Our stay was signed off with Breakfast meeting at the Coffee Shop adjacent to The Food Store where we were joined by Mr Edzuar Zar Ayob Azari, Director, Tourism Malaysia, Johor, Mr Shyam Nath Nair, Honorary Chairman, Malaysian Association of Hotels, Johor Chapter and Mima Melisa Shahban, Tourism Officer. Their interactions in a separate story…
The Food Store offers café style stmosphere for a quick cup of coffee and juice. You can choose to eat in or "Grab & Go" with a wide variety of freshly made pastries and sand witches which are available throughout the day.

Toll hike affects Johor hotel business. Occupancy dropped 18% in ...

Posted: 02 Nov 2014 10:18 PM PST

Oriental Daily News, October 29, 2014

JOHOR BARU – The rise of toll charges in Malaysia and Singapore has impacted the local hotel industry. Malaysian Association of Hotels Johor Chapter chairman Shyam Nath said Johor recorded a drop of between 15% and 18% in business from August to October.

Shyam Nair said the toll hike indeed affected the local hotel industry. December had always been the peak season for hotels in Johor but this year the hotel bookings were less and slower compared to last year.

He believed the hikes in toll rate is a temporary impact and the situation will be better after 90 days with occupancy gradually return to normal.

"The Singaporeans will not just stay in Singapore, they will still come to Malaysia, this is just a temporary situation."

Shyam Nair spoke to the media at a press conference after attending a charity event hosted by his Association. Also present at the event were the Association's committee member Mark Kesang (translated name), Mahadi (translated name), Benny Toh (translated name), treasurer Mah Wee Kong (translated name) and secretary Loong Kee Pung (translated name).

Last minute booking

Shyam Nair said although the bookings for December is still slow, but Johor Baru is facing a special situation, many travelers chose to make last minute booking.

"Many travelers will book their rooms 72 hours before the trip. The impact on occupancy rate will only be clear after December."

He mentioned that apart from the lower turnout of Singaporean customers, Chinese customers are also showing a significant decrease while the number of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Vietnam guests is on the rise.

He said the Johor Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee headed by Datuk Tee Siew Keong have been established to promote the development of Johor tourism. The committee will strengthen the promotion of local tourism development, expand the Indian market and attract more Indian travelers to the region.

Shyam Nair also revealed that the Malaysian Association of Hotels currently has 13 chapters in the country and 780 members who owns three to five star hotels.

The Johor Chapter currently has 74 members, providing 12,500 hotel rooms, which is the third after Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. In the year 2018, the Johor Chapter member and hotel rooms are expected to increase to 91 and 18,700 respectively.
