King bed

The Renaissance Johor Bahru is where we spent Jolie's birthday. It's five-star, it's elegant, and it's still got that clean new hotel feel. The hotel is between the city centre (about 15 minutes drive from the Causeway) and the busy trading port of Pasir Gudang. So it gets both families as well as the business crowd.

We had the junior suite and adjoining twin room. Let me show you the rest of the rooms.

Twin room Deluxe
The regular guest rooms come with King beds (first photo) or twin beds (above).

Twin Room
They are pretty spacious at 34sqm/366sqft to 36sqm/387sqft for regular rooms.

The bay view
You can also choose rooms with a bay view.

Bathroom
Nice, clean, contemporary bathrooms with Tokyo Milk toiletries. Regular rooms have showers, not tubs.

Bathroom - bay view room
Some of them have peek-a-boo windows.

The lap pool
The pool is on the sixth floor. There's a lap pool and a smaller round shallow pool for kids.

Pool Terrace Room
The Pool Terrace Rooms open right out to the pool.

Pool Terrace Room bedroom
The bedroom offers cool and cosy respite after a day's worth of tanning.

Pool terrace room bath area
The ensuite bath is lovely. Only three types of rooms have bath tubs - Pool Terrace, Junior Suite and the Presidential Suite.

Living and dining area in Presidential Suite
And this is what the Presidential Suite looks like. It goes for RM5,000 a night, and has been booked several times already.

Living Room of Presidential Suite
The Renaissance also gets film and TV crew doing shoots.

What a view from the balcony
Another perk - the gorgeous coastline view from the high-floor balcony.

Business and meeting area in the Presidential Suite
A small nook next to the balcony serves as a business or work area.

Bar and kitchen area in the Presidential Suite
There is a dedicated bar and kitchen area in the Presidential Suite.

The bedroom in the Presidential Suite with see-through bathroom
It's a one-bedroom suite, with a gorgeous bathroom.

Living area of the bedroom in the Presidential Suite
The bedroom itself has a mini living area, and walk-in closet.

Gym at Renaissance JB
Also on the sixth floor is a well-equipped gym.

Locker and Sauna rooms
The locker room and sauna are nearby as well.

Grand ballroom
The grand ballroom has seating capacity for 800, expandable to accommodate 1,100 when the outer areas are included. It's one of the biggest in Johor Bahru. Can you say wedding banquet?

Second floor conference area
The business and conference facilities are also on the second floor across from the huge ballroom.

There's a cafe-like atmosphere, and they even have two working ovens here that make the place smell great with bakes
They deliberately made it cosy and cafe-like. There are even two functioning ovens that churn out delicious bakes and make the place smell even more welcoming.

Business meeting room
There are a total of 11 meeting rooms. Some of which have huge windows and natural light. But you might need to draw them at times for presentations.

The grand lobby takes up more than two floors in height.

Next up, I'll show you their fine-dining Chinese restaurant Wan Li, which serves pretty good mod Chinese food that's been inspected as suitable for Muslim consumption (they just can't have the halal certification because they serve liquor).

Our last and final destination was Johor Bahru, though I had been to Johor Bahru briefly in 2009, but I saw it in a completely new light with this Mega FAM trip organised by Malaysia Tourism. After paying tribute to shopper's Mecca – Johor Premium Outlets located on the outskirts of Johor, we reached Hotel Double Tree Hilton. Somehow I got the feelers that this hotel and our stay would be unique here. How true my senses turned out to be! A very warm welcome awaited us and a complimentary Cookie Card was given to us on arrival. A cookie lover, that I am, I wasted no time in getting my cookie. The cookie is given to every guest who checks in the hotel. I was curious to know about this and I was told that hotel gives out approximately 77,000 chocolate chip cookies each day adding up to more than 28 million cookies annually. Since 1995, Christie Cookie Company has been the keeper of their secret cookie recipe. That's why they taste so good!

Double tree
Ideally located in the Central Business District, within walking distance of the Persada Convention Center, the contemporary DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru overlooks the surrounding city and the Straits of Johor. Here you can enjoy easy access to City Square shopping and attractions including Johor Zoo and the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque. Changi International Airport and Senai International Airport are easily reached from the hotel.

Mr Amarinder Sadana, Director, Business Development accompanied by Hadi Abdullah, Sales Manager took us around the hotel where many more surprises unfolded. More on that later. A very hospitable staff took us to our rooms which were very spacious, well-lit, well-equipped and could see swimming pool located on the 13th floor. It was heavenly experience to sit on the window and watch Johor's skyline from hotel's window early morning.

Next morning our day began with breakfast at Makan a multi-cuisine restaurant manned by expert chefs and other staff. Food was just awesome like Pancakes, Omelettes, Stews, Sausages, Croissants, fresh salad bowls, juices, breads, idli's what not. That was best part of the day. I looked forward to that every day. Indeed Makan Kitchen is an eclectic mix of famous cuisine prepared in live, interactive kitchen showcasing diversity of many native favourites from different states of the country.

Mr Sadana and Mr Abdullah took us round the hotel and we were witness to some really luxurious suits which are best suited for royalty where one could unwind in a spacious guest room, offering city or Straits water views, a large desk, 40″ LED TV and WiFi. Not only had this it had facilities for a kitchenette, laundry facilities and Executive Lounge access.

Mr Sadana said, "You can hold a business or social function at our hotel with 13,993 sq.ft. of event space, including two magnificent divisible ballrooms, five meeting rooms and an outdoor terrace. Whether you have a corporate business meeting or your dream wedding, we will do it with élan." He added, "We have 335 well – appointed guest rooms and suits including 22 apartment style suites."
During the tour, Mr Sadana took us to 13th floor where swimming pool was located. This was the outdoor pool with separate pool for children.

After this he took us to Tosca – Fine Dining Italian Restaurant and believe me I had never seen such wonderful restaurant in any of my international sojourns. Tosca is located poolside of 13th floor. Mr Sadana added, "Our Italian Trattoria and bar offer rustic Italian food prepared with contemporary flair for lunch and dinner, along with stunning views over the Straits of Johor. Not only this it also offers dining options ranging from indoor, private family dining room with transparent kitchen, poolside and private rooms." Wining & Dining would certainly be a treat here with friends, family and business associates.

Their friendly and attentive staff provided personalized service throughout our stay. No wonder they call it CARE (Create A Rewarding Experience). "From your arrival to your departure — and everything in between — we'll go above and beyond to make you feel cared for," quipped Abdullah.

Our stay was signed off with Breakfast meeting at the Coffee Shop adjacent to The Food Store where we were joined by Mr Edzuar Zar Ayob Azari, Director, Tourism Malaysia, Johor, Mr Shyam Nath Nair, Honorary Chairman, Malaysian Association of Hotels, Johor Chapter and Mima Melisa Shahban, Tourism Officer. Their interactions in a separate story…
The Food Store offers café style stmosphere for a quick cup of coffee and juice. You can choose to eat in or "Grab & Go" with a wide variety of freshly made pastries and sand witches which are available throughout the day.

Cafe BLD, Renaissance Hotel, Johor Bahru, Malaysia Oct 2014 ...

Posted: 23 Oct 2014 10:31 PM PDT

Cafe BLD is an excellent, excellent restaurant. It offers an à la carte menu. The a la carte menu consists of Western standards such as Fish and Chips, steak, pizza etc. There are also local favourites such as Nasi Goreng, Penang Fried Noodles etc.

What Cafe BLD is most famous for is its buffets. Its lunch and dinner buffets feature live cooking stations where your order is prepared right in front of you, a la minute. Food has never been fresher. Because the cooking stations are live and open, diners can enjoy a visual as well as interactive experience. The experience is visual as diners participate viscerally, vicariously though the act of watching the food being prepared in front of them. The food prepartion takes on an interactive dimension for diners can communicate to the chef how they like their food to be prepared. You can choose to have salad, teppanyaki, noodles prepared right in front of you.

Other interesting stations of note in this buffet are the sushi bar, the fresh seafood bar, the roast beef station, satay, dim sum, pop corn machine, ice cream bar, chocolate fountain, candy floss machine and fire-oven baked pizza. Because they were baked in a fire oven, the pizzas here take on a crispy crust and a certain, very appealing smoky flavour. The variety and quality of food served up during their buffets definitely rivals that of 5-star hotels in cosmopolitan capital cities.

The first in Johor Bahru to introduce an open concept kitchen, the buffets are extremely popular with locals as well as Singaporeans who travel across the causeway. Though the restaurant is very, very busy, the staff always remain unflappable. I am simply amazed by their service. They are always composed. They work briskly and efficiently. For a mass-market buffet, they found it in them to drop by and give personalised attention and see how you are doing. For that alone, this restaurant stands head and shoulders above all buffets in major capital cities.

I tried a couple of their à la carte dishes.

The sirloin steak is thick, generous and satisfying. I requested it to be done 'medium' and the chef had it done just right.

The salmon filet is also very thick and generous. The salmon skin was seared to thin crispness. Of note is the presentation. Simply adorned with fiery red baby tomatoes, the presentation was simple and striking.

Recommended side dishes to go with these main courses are the Spinach à la Creme and the Mashed Truffle Potago. Of particular note is the Mashed Truffle Potato- I can never get enough of the distinctive flavour of truffle. That makes it a clear winner in my eyes.

Thanks to its originality, vast variety, unsurpassed service and off-the-chart value, Cafe BLD is definitely a place worth spending your money on.
